Le stelle marine e altri echinodermi assorbono il 2% dell’inquinamento

Se qualcuno pensa che la natura possa assorbire le emissioni di carbonio rilasciate ogni anno dalle attività umane soltanto per una piccola percentuale dei 5,5 miliardi di tonnellate di emissioni totali, ora potrebbe ricredersi. Tra i vari “mezzi” attraverso i quali la nostra Terra ci salva dall’anidride carbonica che noi emettiamo (alberi, oceani, ecc.), sembra che gli echinodermi, come le stelle marine, ricci di mare e i gigli di mare, siano depositi di carbonio tra i più grandi in assoluto. Essi riescono a stoccare l’incredibile cifra di circa 100 milioni di tonnellate, o in termini percentuali, quasi il 2% delle emissioni umane.

Questa cifra è inferiore a quella che gli organismi come il plancton, capaci di immagazzinare il carbonio che si deposita sul fondo del mare, riescono ad immagazzinare. Possono sembrare esserini piccoli ed insignificanti, ma queste unità semplici riescono ad immagazzinare da sole da 0,4 ad 1,8 miliardi di tonnellate all’anno, a seconda dei diversi studi.

Gli organismi Echinodermi sono fatti fino all’80% di carbonato di calcio, come spiega Mario Lebrato, dottorando presso l’Istituto Leibniz di scienze marine e autore della ricerca, il quale si è domandato a quanto ammonta la quantità di carbonio che in realtà viene immagazzinata dal plancton.

Secondo quanto pubblicato sul sito Nature.com, Craig Smith dell’Università delle Hawaii dice che questi dati possono essere effettivamente visti al ribasso in quanto

questo progetto è riuscito ad estrapolare vaste aree e senza dubbio i punti caldi che sono stati trascurati non sono stati inclusi nella media globale.

Smith ha sottolineato che ci sono vaste aree del Pacifico equatoriale che hanno un gran numero di echinodermi, ma che non sono stati finora ben studiati. Probabilmente analizzando questa gran massa di fauna marina ci si renderebbe conto di quanta mano dà all’uomo nell’evitare l’autodistruzione, e magari farci rendere conto della loro importanza, dato che per adesso sembra che la loro sorte interessi ben poche persone. L’inquinamento dei mari sta distruggendo il loro habitat, e questa mano che oggi ci danno potrebbe venire a mancare in futuro.
