Che le città italiane fossero tra le più inquinate d’Europa (e forse del mondo) lo sapevamo già. I giorni in cui l’inquinamento superava i limiti consentiti dalla legge erano troppi e lo sono stati per molti anni, ma secondo l’ultima rilevazione Istat proveniente dal database Airbase dell’Agenzia europea per l’ambiente, la situazione è peggiore di quanto si potesse pensare.

Secondo quanto rielaborato dall’Iss (Istituto superiore di Sanità) in occasione della Settimana europea della mobilità, delle 30 città europee più inquinate, ben 17 sono italiane, con il nostro Paese che ne presenta ben tre tra le prime quattro. La città che in tutta Europa ha la qualità dell’aria peggiore è Plovdiv, in Bulgaria, ma al secondo, terzo e quarto posto troviamo Torino, Brescia e Milano. Un record di cui andare davvero poco fieri.

Al contrario, com’era facile immaginare, le città con la qualità dell’aria migliore sono nel Nord Europa, e più precisamente in Svezia che può vantare 3 città tra le prime 4. La città con l’aria più pulita, sempre secondo l’Iss, si trova in Estonia ed è la capitale, Tallin, seguita dalle svedesi Stoccolma, Lund e Malmo.

I dati sono stati elaborati considerando il periodo 2004-2008, classificando le città in base a tre criteri: Pm10, ozono e biossido di azoto. In quanto ad ozono troposferico (una componente fondamentale dello smog fotochimico, la quale è dannosa per gli esseri umani, la flora e la fauna), la situazione di Torino si può definire “disastrosa”, dato che risultava la città più inquinata d’Europa nel 2004 e 2005, mentre ora è seconda; per quanto riguarda il Pm10 è ancora in vetta a questa poco invidiabile classifica, mentre l’Italia può “vantare” una posizione di spicco in quanto a città “fuorilegge”.

Esistono infatti dei limiti di legge, stabiliti dall’Ue, che si possono superare soltanto per un numero limitato di giorni fissato a 35 l’anno. Purtroppo però delle 30 città europee che superano questo limite per almeno 50 giorni, ben undici sono italiane (Torino, Milano, Brescia, Padova, Modena, Bergamo, Pescara, Napoli, Venezia, Rimini e Reggio Emilia), anche se la situazione è in leggero miglioramento visto che siamo passati dai 178 giorni di sforamento di Milano e Torino a 155 giorni nel 2006, vicino ai 100 nel 2008, ed il trend fa ben sperare per i calcoli riguardanti il 2009.

Considerando invece il totale dell’aria nazionale, possiamo almeno rallegrarci del fatto che al Sud ancora si respira, e questo ha portato i dati sull’inquinamento ad abbassarsi. Così possiamo notare che nelle classifiche nazionali, nonostante i dati disastrosi, l’Italia risulti solo terza tra i 23 Paesi analizzati, dietro Bulgaria e Grecia, mentre le nazioni più pulite sono sempre le stesse: Estonia, Svezia, Finlandia, Danimarca, Irlanda e Portogallo.

  5. questa dell’inquinamento da polveri sottili è una cosa gravissima. Si è detto che a Torino ci sono centinaia di morti.
    Perchè nessun giudice si preoccupa di condannare questi sindaci, che continuano a fare parcheggi al centro della citta?

    • sono d’accordo, un sindaco che non prende provvedimenti contro le polveri sottili è direttamente responsabile. La normativa vigente, ad ogni modo, vigila sugli sforamenti per far in modo che non superino i livelli ammessi per garantire la salute pubblica, anche se andrebbero prese misure ancora più restrittive, a mio avviso.
