Come detto già qualche giorno fa, di certo questo non è un buon anno per i rinoceronti. Alla fine dello scorso ottobre ci è giunta la notizia che il rinoceronte di Giava si era ufficialmente estinto in Vietnam. Poi, appena una settimana dopo, una ricerca effettuata in Sudafrica aveva rilevato che nei primi 10 mesi del 2011 erano stati uccisi più rinoceronti che in tutto l’anno precedente. E siccome le brutte notizie non vengono mai da sole, eccone un’altra che forse fa ancora più male delle precendenti: secondo le ultime valutazioni, i rinoceronti neri Occidentali sono definitivamente estinti.
La valutazione, condotta in collaborazione con l’IUCN, ha scoperto che mentre le popolazioni di rinoceronte in generale, sia bianco che nero, sono in aumento, grazie anche alla collaborazione dei volontari che le stanno provando tutte per sottrarli ai bracconieri, alcune sottospecie molto importanti sono particolarmente a rischio e spesso contano poche decine di esemplari. Tra queste c’è, o forse sarebbe meglio dire c’era, il rinoceronte nero Occidentale (Diceros bicornis longipes), che viveva nella zona Centro-Nord-Ovest dell’Africa, ma c’è anche il rinoceronte bianco del Nord che secondo il gruppo che ha effettuato la rilevazione, potrebbe essere già scomparso, e se non lo è ci manca davvero poco. Secondo l’IUCN è il bracconaggio la più grande minaccia per rinoceronti in tutto il mondo:
