L’ostello Planet Traveler è costruito su una linea di tram in una zona di Toronto che non permette l’accesso alle auto, in un retrofit di un edificio storico con camere-dormitori a partire da 30 dollari a notte. L’aspetto più “green” di questa struttura è l’installazione è una fonte di un sistema a pompa di calore sotterraneo con otto serpentine a 350 piedi (106 metri) di profondità.
Ma come la maggior parte delle proprietà del centro, l’edificio copriva l’intero isolato, e così le serpentine dovevano essere inserite nel terreno adiacente, sotto la proprietà pubblica. Secondo Energyboom, altre strategie comprendono l’installazione di condutture energetiche per far arrivare direttamente acqua calda alle docce, riscaldata dai pannelli solari termici sul tetto. A questo sistema si affianca un generatore da 4,7 kilowatt di energia fotovoltaica che funge anche da tenda da sole sul patio. Il carico elettrico per ognuno dei LED che forniscono tutte le luci nella costruzione raggiunge un totale di 1.600 watt.
