Qualche giorno prima dell’allarme Ogm in Friuli Venezia Giulia, dove è stata individuata una coltivazione illegale di mais geneticamente modificato, e della lettera inviata dalle associazioni della “Task force per un’Italia libera da Ogm” al presidente della Repubblica Giorgio Napolitano, Greenpeace pubblicava il dossier su “Il vero costo degli Ogm“.
Il rapporto degli attivisti di Greenpeace analizza dal punto di vista economico il fallimento degli investimenti nella coltivazione di Ogm, e va a rafforzare la presa di posizione dell’associazione internazionale dopo le decisioni della Commissione europea in fatto di Ogm e non Ogm.
I dati raccolti da Greenpeace mettono in luce alcuni aspetti legati alla coltivazione di Ogm, a partire dalla vera resa di produzione. A detta dei pro-Ogm cereali e ortaggi geneticamente modificati avrebbero una resa maggiore, è davvero così? In America i campi coltivati con soia Ogm della Monsanto “Roundup Ready” non solo hanno reso il 5- 10% in meno della media, ma gli agricoltori USA hanno dovuto togliere a mano le erbe infestanti resistenti agli erbicidi, che sono aumentate notevolmente. Anche la coltivazione di mais Ogm non ha dato i suoi “frutti”, difatti i prodotti geneticamente modificati sono risultati meno resistenti agli afidi del mais rispetto alle varietà naturali. Alcune colture Ogm sono risultate non resistenti alle alte temperature, e in una società dove il riscaldamento globale ha stravolto il clima e la natura, questo aspetto non è certo da sottovalutare. Uno dei casi più significativi riguarda il cotone Ogm: un gruppo di scienziati cinesi ha dimostrato che il cotone geneticamente modificato può produrre con maggior facilità tossine Bt e rendere le piante più vulnerabili ai bruchi parassiti.
Ai dati scientifici ed economici raccolti, vanno ad aggiungersi i sondaggi di opinione sfavorevoli e i costi di produzione sensibilmente più alti, dovuti all’alto prezzo iniziale delle sementi, allo stoccaggio e alla distribuzione, processi che per timore dei cittadini e per decisioni di governo, devono essere separati dalla produzione di alimenti convenzionali. 400 scienziati di fama mondiale, riuniti nelll’International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Tecnology (IAASTD) hanno convenuto che gli Ogm non sono una priorità nella prospettiva di sfamare il pianeta per il 2050. Allora perché continuare a investire negli Ogm?
