Nucleare di seconda generazione
Più che di energia nucleare di seconda generazione, sarebbe più corretto parlare di reattore nucleare di seconda generazione, una classificazione della progettazione di un reattore nucleare che si riferisce alla classe dei reattori commerciali costruiti fino alla fine degli anni ’90. Siccome la tecnologia nucleare si è evoluta molto rapidamente negli ultimi 10-15 anni, si tende così a generalizzare con le definizioni, parlando così di nucleare di seconda, terza o quarta generazione per distinguere le varie forme che si sono succedute dalla prima originale.
I reattori prototipici di seconda generazione comprendono i PWR, VVER, CANDU, BWR e AGR. Questi si differenziano dalla prima generazione di reattori che si riferiscono al prototipo iniziale dei reattori nucleari destinati alla produzione di energia elettrica. Questi si chiamavano Shippingport, Magnox, Fermi 1, e Dresda. La nomenclatura per i progetti dei reattori, che descrive le quattro “generazioni”, è stata proposta dal Dipartimento per l’energia degli Stati Uniti quando è stato introdotto il concetto di reattori di quarta generazione.
In genere la modernizzazione avvenuta dopo l’anno 2000 comprende il miglioramento dei sistemi di sicurezza e una durata di vita di circa 60 anni, contro i 30 o 40 anni dei primi prototipi di seconda generazione. Tuttavia, molti reattori di seconda generazione hanno oggi un design che permette un’estensione della vita utile dell’impianto fino a 50 o 60 anni, con i progetti migliori che si stima possano raggiungere anche gli 80 anni.
PWR: I reattori ad acqua pressurizzata (PWR) costituiscono la maggioranza di tutti gli impianti nucleari Occidentali e sono uno dei due tipi di reattore ad acqua leggera (LWR). L’altro tipo sono reattori ad acqua bollente (BWR). In un PWR il fluido refrigerante primario (l’acqua) viene pompato ad alta pressione verso il nocciolo del reattore, quindi l’energia termica viene trasferita ad un generatore di vapore. A differenza di un reattore ad acqua bollente, la pressione nel circuito del refrigerante primario impedisce all’acqua bollente di entrare all’interno del reattore. Tutti i reattori ad acqua leggera usano la comune acqua sia come refrigerante che come moderatore dei neutroni. I PWR sono stati originariamente progettati per fungere da centrali nucleari e sottomarini. Attualmente operano negli Stati Uniti e in Russia (per la propulsione marina delle portaerei, sottomarini nucleari e rompighiaccio), ma ci sono anche progetti per portarli in Francia.
I vantaggi sono l’ottima stabilità a causa della loro tendenza a produrre meno energia con l’aumento delle temperature, l’acqua non è contaminata nel ciclo radioattivo, ed ha meno pericoli in caso di incidenti. Gli svantaggi riguardano la necessità del riscaldamento costante dell’acqua, maggiori costi di costruzione, pause prolungate tra attività, alcuni rischi legati alla corrosione dell’acciaio causata dagli agenti chimici presenti nell’acqua, i costi di arricchimento dell’uranio, e le grandi dimensioni di cui necessita la centrale per ospitare questi reattori.
VVER: I reattori VVER (dal russo Vodo-Vodyanoi Energetichesky Reactor; reattore acqua-acqua energetico) 
sono una serie di reattori ad acqua pressurizzata (PWR), sviluppati dall’Unione Sovietica e utilizzati da Armenia, Bulgaria, Cina, Repubblica Ceca, Finlandia, ex Germania dell’Est, Ungheria, India, Iran, Slovacchia, Ucraina e Russia. Il modello VVER-440 V230 è il tipo più comune, impiega sei refrigeranti primari con un generatore di vapore orizzontale. Il modello più avanzato V213 utilizza un raffreddamento del nucleo di emergenza e sistemi di alimentazione idrica ausiliari, nonché di aggiornati sistemi di localizzazione degli incidenti. I reattori nucleari VVER sono stati anche ridimensionati per essere utilizzati dalla Marina sovietica e dalla flotta di sottomarini nucleari RFAS nonché da navi da guerra di superficie. Le barre di combustibile del reattore sono completamente immerse nell’acqua e mantenute a 15 MPa di pressione in modo che non bolla in condizioni normali. L’acqua nel reattore serve sia come liquido refrigerante che da moderatore. In caso di circolazione del liquido di raffreddamento l’effetto di moderazione dei neutroni dell’acqua diminuisce, riducendo l’intensità della reazione e la compensazione per la perdita di raffreddamento, una condizione nota come coefficiente di vuoto negativo. Il reattore è tutto racchiuso in una struttura massiccia pressurizzata in acciaio. Il carburante è poco arricchito ed è biossido di uranio (UO2) o equivalente pressato in pellet e assemblato in barre di combustibile. L’intensità della reazione nucleare controllata dalle barre di controllo può essere inserita nel reattore dall’alto. Queste barre sono realizzate in un materiale che assorbe i neutroni e in funzione della profondità di inserimento ostacolano la reazione a catena. Se c’è un’emergenza, un arresto del reattore può essere effettuato mediante inserimento completo delle barre di controllo nel nucleo.
CANDU: Il CANDU (“Canada Deuterio Uranio”) è un reattore canadese pressurizzato ad acqua pesante. I reattori sono utilizzati per produrre energia nucleare da combustibile nucleare. E’ utilizzato esclusivamente in Canada dove tutti i reattori sono di questo tipo, ma anche Romania e Turchia vorrebbero installarli sul proprio territorio. Il suo nome è un riferimento al suo moderatore deuterio-ossido (acqua pesante) e al suo uso di combustibile uranio. Le unità sono progettate per avere una vita operativa prevista di oltre 50 anni, ma dopo circa 25 anni hanno bisogno di sostituire alcuni componenti chiave, come i canali del combustibile. Negli ultimi anni la tecnologia ha permesso di migliorare le prestazioni dei reattori CANDU, con un aumento dei margini operativi, di sicurezza, di protezione ambientale ed una migliore prevenzione antincendio e contro gli incidenti. E’ migliorata anche la quantità di energia prodotta, ma ha solo un problema non da poco: emette grandi quantità di trizio che hanno portato molte associazioni ambientaliste a manifestare ferocemente. Il trizio è una forma radioattiva dell’idrogeno (H-3), con un tempo di dimezzamento di 12,3 anni. Si trova in piccole quantità in natura (circa 4 kg stimati in tutto il mondo), creato dall’interazione dei raggi cosmici con l’azoto atmosferico nell’alta atmosfera. Il trizio è considerato un radionuclide debole a causa della bassa energia delle sue emissioni radioattive, le quali non viaggiano molto lontano e non penetrano nella pelle. Ma se entra nel corpo per inalazione o ingestione diventa molto pericoloso. Si calcola che circa l’1% sfugge al contenimento ed il monitoraggio non è sempre facile.
BWR: Boiling Water Reactor, o reattore ad acqua bollente, è il secondo tipo di reattore nucleare più utilizzato al mondo dopo il PWR. Utilizza acqua demineralizzata (acqua leggera) come liquido refrigerante ed un moderatore dei neutroni. Il calore è prodotto dalla fissione nucleare nel nocciolo del reattore, e questo provoca il raffreddamento dell’acqua bollente che produce vapore. Il vapore viene utilizzato direttamente per azionare una turbina, dopo di che viene raffreddato in un condensatore e riconvertito in acqua liquida. Tale acqua viene poi restituita al nocciolo del reattore, completando il ciclo. Questo tipo di reattori è molto comune in tutto il mondo, e lo troviamo, oltre che negli USA, anche in Germania, Svezia, Messico, Giappone e Regno Unito.
I vantaggi rispetto al PWR riguardano una minore pressione atmosferica utilizzata per il processo con un risparmio di circa 158 volte; una minor irradiazione; una durata di vita più lunga; un funzionamento a temperature più basse; un minor numero di componenti per la mancanza di generatori di vapore; una riduzione del rischio di rottura e di danni al nocciolo; non necessita di corrente elettrica; è più facile da gestire in condizioni di emergenza; può essere progettato per funzionare solo con la circolazione naturale; non usa l’acido borico per controllare la fissione e dunque ha meno rischi di corrosione. Gli svantaggi invece riguardano un bisogno di una maggiore strumentazione per un processo più complicato, delle dimensioni molto maggiori rispetto al PWR con costi più elevati; livelli di radiazioni più alti e alcune preoccupazioni sul contenimento della pressione che può facilitare gli incidenti.
AGR: Un reattore a raffreddamento avanzato a gas è un tipo di reattore nucleare utilizzato esclusivamente in Gran Bretagna. Esso è raffreddato a gas, utilizzando grafite come moderatore dei neutroni e biossido di carbonio come liquido refrigerante. Opera ad una temperatura più elevata del gas per una migliore efficienza termica, richiede un rivestimento in acciaio inox per resistere alle temperature più elevate ed uranio arricchito come combustibile. Tutte le centrali AGR sono configurate con due reattori in un unico edificio. Non è molto utilizzato perché genera una potenza inferiore rispetto agli altri ed è meno efficiente.
La più grande centrale nucleare europea attualmente in funzione è di seconda generazione, ed in particolare è una VVER presente in Ucraina, a Zaporizhzhia.
