Nucleare di quarta generazione
Il nucleare di quarta generazione è l’ultimo nato nella “famiglia” del nucleare. L’energia nucleare ha prodotto, fino ad oggi (ottobre 2010) quattro generazioni, di cui quest’ultima è ancora nella fase embrionale e, se vogliamo continuare la metafora del bambino, non è ancora nata del tutto. I reattori di quarta generazione infatti sono un insieme di disegni e modelli teorici dei reattori nucleari attualmente oggetto di ricerca.
La maggior parte di questi disegni si crede non diventeranno mai commerciabili, almeno non prima del 2030, con l’eccezione di una versione del reattore ad altissima temperatura (VHTR) chiamato Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP). Il primo NGNP si calcola possa essere completato entro il 2021. I reattori nucleari con finalità energetiche al momento in funzione in tutto il mondo sono generalmente considerati sistemi di seconda o terza generazione, con la maggior parte dei sistemi di prima generazione che sono stati chiusi o sostituiti già diversi anni fa.
La ricerca di questi tipi di reattore è stata ufficialmente avviata dal Forum Internazionale della Generazione IV (GIF) basato su otto obiettivi tecnologici. Gli obiettivi primari erano quello di migliorare la sicurezza nucleare, migliorare la resistenza alla proliferazione, minimizzare gli sprechi e l’utilizzo delle risorse naturali, e diminuire il costo per costruire e gestire tali impianti. I reattori sono destinati ad essere utilizzati nelle centrali nucleari per produrre energia nucleare da combustibili nucleari.
Tre sistemi sono nominalmente reattori termici e tre reattori veloci. Il VHTR è anche oggetto di ricerca potenzialmente per fornire calore ad alta qualità di processo per la produzione di idrogeno. I reattori veloci offrono la possibilità agli attinidi di bruciare per ridurre ulteriormente i rifiuti e di essere in grado di riprodurre più carburante di quanto ne consumino. Questi sistemi offrono significativi progressi nel campo della sostenibilità, sicurezza e affidabilità.
Reattore ad altissima temperatura (VHTR): Il concetto base di questo reattore è l’utilizzo di un nocciolo moderato a grafite con un unico passaggio nel ciclo del combustibile ad uranio. Questo reattore prevede una temperatura di uscita di 1.000 ° C. Le alte temperature consentono applicazioni come produzione di calore o di idrogeno attraverso il processo termochimico zolfo-iodio. Il reattore avrebbe anche un sistema di sicurezza passiva. Il primo VHTR previsto doveva essere installato in Sudafrica nella versione PBMR (reattore modulare su letto di ciottoli), ma un improvviso incremento dei costi e le preoccupazioni su possibili problemi tecnici imprevisti hanno scoraggiato i potenziali investitori e clienti ed hanno fatto saltare le trattative.
Reattore ad acqua supercritica (SCWR): Questo reattore utilizza l’acqua supercritica come fluido di lavoro. Si tratta fondamentalmente di reattori ad acqua leggera (LWR) che operano alle più alte pressioni e temperature con un unico ciclo diretto che li rendono simili ad un reattore ad acqua bollente (BWR). Ma dal momento che utilizza acqua supercritica (da non confondere con la massa critica) come fluido di lavoro, consta solo di una fase, come il Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). Ma comunque potrebbe funzionare a temperature molto superiori degli attuali PWR e BWR. Si tratta di reattori con un’elevata efficienza termica (cioè, circa il 45% contro circa il 33% di efficienza per i reattori ad acqua leggera attuali) e la semplificazione dell’impianto. L’obiettivo è la produzione di energia elettrica a basso costo ed attualmente sono 13 i Paesi che lo stanno studiando.
Reattore a sali fusi (MSR): Questo è un tipo di reattore nucleare in cui il liquido refrigerante è il sale fuso. Sono stati molti i disegni presentati per questo tipo di reattore ed alcuni prototipi sono anche stati costruiti. Qui il combustibile nucleare dissolto nel sale fuso come tetrafluoruro fluoruro di uranio (UF4), farebbe raggiungere al fluido la criticità di flusso in un nucleo di grafite che servirebbe anche come moderatore.
Reattore veloce raffreddato a gas (GFR): Il sistema è dotato di uno spettro a neutroni veloci e ciclo del combustibile chiuso efficiente per la conversione dell’uranio fertile e la gestione degli attinidi. Il reattore è raffreddato ad elio, con una temperatura di uscita di 850 ° C, e con una turbina diretta a gas a ciclo Brayton ad alta efficienza termica. Diverse forme di combustibile sono considerate per il loro potenziale di operare a temperature molto elevate e per garantire un ottimo mantenimento dei prodotti di fissione.
Reattore veloce raffreddato a sodio (SFR): E’ un modello che si basa su due progetti strettamente connessi già esistenti, il reattore nucleare autofertilizzante ed il reattore veloce integrale. Gli obiettivi sono di aumentare l’efficienza dell’utilizzo di uranio dal processamento del plutonio ed eliminare la necessità che gli isotopi transuranici lascino il sito. La progettazione del reattore utilizza un nocciolo non moderato in esecuzione su neutroni veloci, progettati per consentire ad un isotopo transuranico di essere consumato (e in alcuni casi utilizzato come combustibile). La sicurezza è passiva e la quantità di rifiuti è all’incirca dimezzata. Un prototipo del reattore veloce integrale è stato costruito, ma il progetto venne cancellato prima che potesse entrare in funzione.
Reattore veloce raffreddato a piombo (LFR): Questo è provvisto di un reattore raffreddato a piombo a spettro neutronico veloce o lega a eutettica piombo/bismuto (LBE) con un ciclo del combustibile chiuso. Una batteria elettrica rifornisce la centrale quando non sono presenti reazioni elettrochimiche. Il carburante è di metallo o di nitruro a base di uranio fertile e contenente elementi transuranici. Il LFR è raffreddato per convezione naturale con una temperatura di uscita del liquido di raffreddamento del reattore di 550 ° C, che può arrivare fino ad 800 ° C con materiali avanzati. La temperatura più elevata consente la produzione di idrogeno da processi termochimici.
Vantaggi. Rispetto all’attuale tecnologia delle centrali nucleari, i benefici dichiarati per i reattori di quarta generazione sono:
- Le scorie nucleari durano pochi decenni, anziché millenni;
- Resa energetica di 100-300 volte superiore alle precedenti versioni con la stessa quantità di combustibile nucleare;
- Possibilità di consumare scorie nucleari esistenti per la produzione di energia elettrica;
- Migliorata sicurezza di funzionamento.
L’altro lato della medaglia, gli svantaggi, riguarda il fatto che, trattandosi di una tecnologia nuova, ancora i rischi sulla sicurezza ed i costi possono essere maggiori, mentre gli operatori hanno poca esperienza con il nuovo modello. L’ingegnere nucleare David Lochbaum ha spiegato che quasi tutti gli incidenti nucleari gravi si sono verificati con quella che era al tempo la tecnologia più recente. Egli sostiene che
il problema dei nuovi reattori e degli incidenti è duplice: gli scenari impossibili da pianificare nelle simulazioni e gli esseri umani che fanno errori. Fabbricazione, costruzione, funzionamento e la manutenzione dei nuovi reattori dovranno affrontare una ripida curva di apprendimento. Le tecnologie avanzate avranno un elevato rischio di incidenti ed errori. La tecnologia può essere provata, ma le persone no.
Le nazioni che attualmente stanno studiando questa nuova forma di reattori nucleari sono Stati Uniti, Regno Unito, Svizzera, Corea del Sud, Sudafrica, Giappone, Francia, Canada, Argentina, Unione Europea, Cina e Russia. Nonostante, come abbiamo visto, gli Stati Uniti stiano spendendo diversi milioni in ricerca su questa nuova tecnologia, non è molto convinto di questa scelta il Presidente Barack Obama, fermo sostenitore delle energie rinnovabili, il quale ha ammesso di puntare ancora sul nucleare solo per colmare momentaneamente il vuoto che un giorno verrà riempito dalle energie pulite.
La “Quarta generazione” dell’energia nucleare è un’altro slogan che ha poco successo alle spalle. L’idea è che questi nuovi reattori serviranno a chiudere il ciclo del combustibile e dei rifiuti, cioè rielaborare le barre di combustibile esaurite in nuove che possono essere riutilizzate. Tuttavia, come per la cattura ed il recupero del carbonio, tanto c’è ancora da fare, nonostante oltre 60 anni e miliardi di dollari nella ricerca. Nel frattempo alcuni Paesi, come Francia e Giappone, riproducono il carburante in modo limitato, producendo ancora centinaia di tonnellate di rifiuti tossici che potrebbero potenzialmente essere utilizzati nelle armi nucleari. Un impianto francese pompa 100 milioni di litri di rifiuti liquidi radioattivi nel canale della Manica ogni anno, e il governo francese ha calcolato che il ritrattamento dei rifiuti costerà 25 miliardi di dollari in più rispetto allo stoccaggio.
Rimangono dunque dubbi sulla possibilità di trattare i rifiuti radioattivi, e spendere altre decine di miliardi di dollari in ricerche che poi ripropongono lo stesso problema non sembra un affare economicamente vantaggioso.
La quarta generazione dell’energia nucleare non è più sicura delle centrali esistenti. In realtà, ha i suoi pericoli. Un tipo di questo reattore utilizza sodio altamente reattivo come refrigerante che, se prende fuoco quando esposto all’aria ed esplode, entra in contatto con l’acqua. E il carburante è ancora radioattivo. Dato che il ciclo del combustibile deve essere ancora chiuso, nonostante i tentativi in tutto il mondo, il popolo americano affronterà ancora la minaccia del combustibile esaurito.
Insomma i costi sembrano alti e, al momento, ancora incalcolabili, mentre i pericoli reali e i problemi, nonostante la tecnologia avanzata, restano sempre lì. Visto che non si prevedono tempi brevi per la realizzazione delle prime centrali nucleari di quarta generazione, c’è la possibilità che con il progredire delle tecnologie rinnovabili l’atomo venga sempre meno utilizzato, lasciando morire questo pargolo ancora in grembo.
