Secondo lo studio di ricercatori svedesi e americani pubblicato sulla rivista Science Advances, i livelli di mercurio presenti nei pesci che mangiamo si potrebbero alzare fino a sette volte in più. La causa sarebbe l’aumento delle temperatura causato di cambiamenti climatici. Infatti dall’inizio dell’era industriale la presenza del mercurio nell’ecosistema è cresciuta, secondo gli esperti, dal 200% al 500% soprattutto a causa dell’uso dei carburanti fossili, ma adesso l’aumento delle temperature e ul conseguente aumento delle precipitazioni potrebbero aumentare la presenza del mercurio nei pesci fino ad un ulteriore 300-600%, appunto sette volte in più rispetto ai livelli attuali.

Ricordiamo che il mercurio è l’unico metallo liquido a temperatura ambiente ed è anche uno dei più tossici per l’uomo. Ed è per questo che l’OMS lo ha inserito tra le 10 minacce più gravi alla salute, perchè può provocare danni al sistema nervoso, ai polmoni, alla pelle, agli occhi, al sistema digestivo e immunitario. La più comune forma di esposizione dell’uomo al mercurio è appunto attraverso i pesci contaminati che mangia ed è anche per questo che l’aumento della presenza del mercurio nell’ecosistema preoccupa così tanto i ricercatori.

Come spiega la ricercatrice Jeffra Schaefer, l’aumento delle precipitazioni causerà un aumento del deflusso delle acque nei mari, con un conseguente aumento del rilascio di mercurio negli ecosistemi costieri, che sono i principali luoghi di sostentamento, quelli da cui più si ricavano i pesci che poi la gente mangia.

La situazione sarebbe abbastanza allarmante e i ricercatori sperano che la convenzione di “Minamata”, per contenere la minaccia del mercurio firmata nel 2013 da 139 paesi, abbia successo.
