Le Maldive, paradiso di atolli situati nell’Oceano Indiano a sud-sudovest dell’India, rischiano di scomparire per sempre non solo dalle brochures delle agenzie di viaggio, ma dalla Terra.
Colpa ancora una volta del riscaldamento globale, che espone proprio questo arcipelago ad un rischio più elevato rispetto ad altre zone del globo, a causa della loro altezza media sul livello del mare, pari ad appena 1,5 metri.
Tra qualche decennio, le Maldive potrebbero essere completamente sommerse dall’innalzamento delle acque dell’Oceano Indiano, svanendo in fondo al mar.
E così, i circa 349.106 abitanti, non volendo fare la fine di Atlantide, stanno seriamente prendendo in considerazione l’idea di acquistare una nuova Patria, in cui trasferirsi in massa non appena le cose dovessero volgere al peggio.
L’idea del nuovo presidente delle Maldive Mohamed Nasheed, esposta sul giornale britannico Guardian, è quella di istituire un fondo per la raccolta delle risorse economiche necessarie al trasferimento e all’acquisto di nuove terre per il suo popolo. Come ha dichiarato lo stesso Nasheed:
Non vogliamo lasciare le Maldive ma non vogliamo nemmeno diventare profughi e vivere per decenni nelle tende. Non possiamo fare niente, da soli, per fermare il cambiamento climatico e così non ci resta che comprare terra da qualche altra parte. E’ una sorta di assicurazione contro il peggior scenario possibile.
Per reperire i capitali necessari all’acquisto di nuovi territori nazionali il governo delle Maldive ha intenzione di utilizzare, proprio come fanno i Paesi arabi ricchi di greggio, il surplus ricavato dalla vendita di petrolio, che andrà ad arricchire un fondo sovrano.
Ad allarmare il Paese, la notizia dello sfollamento di un’isoletta del Pacifico, Ontong Java, appartenente alle isole Salomone, già sommersa dalle acque. Numerose altre isole sono destinate alla stessa fine entro il 2.015, costringendo gli abitanti a diventare profughi in terra straniera.
Un destino che, evidentemente, non è apprezzato dalle Maldive, e come dargli torto, che hanno pertanto deciso di comprarsi un’altra Patria.
Che si tratti di una rinuncia a combattere non si puo’ proprio dirlo, dal momento che, come sottolineato dallo stesso presidente, il riscaldamento globale non si può sconfiggerlo da soli.
