Con solo 40 esemplari nell’intera area del Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, l’orso marsicano rischia l’estinzione. Le cause principali sono il bracconaggio e la distruzione progressiva dell’habitat naturale.
L’orso marsicano, da sempre simbolo del Parco, è stato protagonista di un documentario sulle Riserve naturali dello Stato, in occasione dell’Anno della Biodiversità e della rivalutazione del Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Un ruolo importante nella tutela dell’animale a rischio estinzione è stato svolto dal Corpo forestale dello Stato che nel 1999 ha aderito al progetto europeo Life per la salvaguardia del patrimonio naturalistico italiano e per il rilancio dell’orso Marsicano. I progetti per la tutela del lupo, altro animale a rischio estinzione, hanno portato nel corso di 20 anni alla ripopolazione del predatore nelle aree protette e oggi se ne contano 400-500 esemplari.
