Nella mattinata di giovedì scorso Greenpeace USA ha avviato una nuova campagna di disobbedienza civile contro il carbone. Gli attivisti hanno srotolato uno striscione gigante in cima alla centrale del Bridgeport Harbor che recitava “Spegnetela: Basta Carbone”. Il Bridgeport Harbor è un impianto vecchio ed inefficiente (ha 40 anni!), e non è necessario per fornire energia alla rete del Connecticut.
Eppure emette 3 milioni di tonnellate di emissioni di anidride carbonica ogni anno, insieme alle 2.800 tonnellate di anidride solforosa tossica, 2.200 tonnellate di ossido di azoto, e persino circa 20 kg di mercurio. La centrale si ritiene sia responsabile dell’aria della città talmente insalubre che un residente su 4 ha l’asma. Gli esperti della sanità stimano che almeno un morto all’anno nella città possa essere attribuito alle emissioni nocive della centrale a carbone, che peraltro, come abbiamo accennato prima, è perfettamente inutile.
Il tutto nella completa ignoranza degli abitanti, i quali, intervistati da Treehugger, hanno affermato che le autorità non gli hanno mai detto che le emissioni potessero essere pericolose, ma avevano semplicemente affermato che la centrale fosse sicura.
Inoltre, come se non bastasse l’inquinamento già prodotto, tutto il carbone che brucia questa centrale per produrre appena 400 MW è importato dall’Indonesia, dove viene estratto da lavoratori che godono di stipendi bassi e pochi diritti umani, per un costo stimato di circa 60 milioni di euro per la spedizione. In sostanza, l’impianto incarna tutto ciò che c’è di sbagliato nella scelta del carbone nell’epoca moderna: vomita abbondanti quantità di emissioni di carbonio, rappresenta un rischio immediato per la salute pubblica, è inefficiente, costoso e vecchio.
Per questo ora gli attivisti di Greenpeace hanno deciso di dire basta, ed avvieranno una serie di iniziative su impianti analoghi per il futuro. L’obiettivo è di convertire le centrali inquinanti in centrali ad energia rinnovabile. Speriamo che, dopo il grande successo ottenuto nella campagna per salvare le balene, anche questa nuova iniziativa avrà un seguito positivo.
