Non sfugge niente agli occhi attenti degli amici dell’ambiente. Se poi l’imputato è il motore di ricerca più famoso al mondo come sottrarsi e nascondere la gaffe, sempre che di gaffe e non di bufala si tratti? Come avrete di certo notato ieri Google andava a palline, con un logo animato, colorato, divertente, certo, ma poco eco-friendly, tanto che per alcuni questo annullerebbe molti degli sforzi compiuti dal search engine per ridurre la sua impronta, ricordate: l’energia eolica per alimentare i data center?

Ad evidenziare il consumo di energia in più delle palline è stato il sito Downloadsquad, e la notizia oggi è stata riportata in Italia da Giornalettismo.com.
La capacità di elaborazione del nuovo doodle con le sferette che fuggivano all’impazzata all’avvicinarsi del mouse, volendosi fidare dei calcoli riportati da Downloadsquad, richiedeva una spinta al massimo dell’hardware del Pc, con un consumo aggiuntivo stimato fra i 15 e i 20 watt di energia. Non sono grandi cifre, ma provate a moltiplicarle per milioni di utenti che ogni giorno, anche svariate volte al giorno ciascuno, transitano sull’homepage di Google per le loro ricerche in rete:

Tutto è nato quando un giornalista di Zdnet, infastidito dall’utilizzo di CPU eccessivo al caricamento della schermata iniziale di Google, ha iniziato a fare un po’ di ricerche, scoprendo, grazie all’aiuto di altri utenti, e con il passaparola su Twitter, che occorrevano per l’appunto fino a 15-20 watt di energia in più per animare le palline codificate in JavaScript.

E c’è da considerarsi anche un altro fattore importante: in molti, forse milioni, con le palline ci hanno giocato più di una volta, riavvicinando il mouse per farle scoppiare nuovamente sullo schermo dopo la prima sorpresa iniziale, per capire il meccanismo, o semplicemente perché erano un’attrattiva irresistibile. E qualche tempo fa in homepage ci siamo ritrovati a giocare a Pac-Man.
Google ammazza-alberi? L’accusa, forse un tantino eccessiva, sta facendo discutere la rete e quasi tutti parteggiano per Google: in fondo ci sono certamente applicazioni animate ben più pesanti di quelle palline un po’ ovunque sul web e la big G è talmente utile da far passare in secondo piano, tutto (o quasi) il resto. Voi da che parte state?

Non so gli altri, ma io generalmente per le ricerche in rete mi affido a google, però non vado mai nella homepage: su chrome scrivo nella barra degli indirizzi, su firefox c’è la barra preimpostata su google e uso questi strumenti…e quanta gente come me fa allo stesso modo? O_o? Il doodle l’ho visto solo perchè ne parlava mezzo web, sennò manco me ne accorgevo!!

  2. Io lo uso dall’homepage e con il doodle ho giochicchiato due volte in tutto, poi ha perso di interesse… e questi calcoli sinceramente non mi convincono, ma non sono abbastanza esperta di informatica per confutarli!

  34. The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
