Fino ad oggi Google, una delle aziende IT più impegnate al mondo nel campo dell’ecologia, aveva incanalato il suo impegno, e milioni di dollari, in investimenti che potessero rendere la sua attività più green. Ad esempio aveva investito molto, come spiegato anche su queste pagine, in server alimentati dalle rinnovabili, in sedi ad alta efficienza energetica o nel trasporto sostenibile dei suoi dipendenti.

Ora pare che l’azienda di Mountain View abbia deciso di allargare il suo campo d’azione al di fuori delle attività strettamente legate all’informatica, e vuol investire in vere e proprie centrali elettriche. Ovviamente alimentate dalle rinnovabili. Per farlo ha deciso di iniziare dall’Europa, ed in particolare nel Paese che più di tutti sembra impegnarsi nel campo, la Germania. Google ha infatti annunciato di voler avviare una centrale solare fotovoltaica da 18,65 Mw.

La centrale sarà costruita a Brandenburg an der Havel, un paese vicino Berlino, e a fronte di un investimento da appena 3,5 milioni di euro (spiccioli per un colosso del genere) darà energia a quasi l’intero distretto cittadino formato da circa 5 mila abitazioni.

Google è sempre alla ricerca di nuove strade per incoraggiare lo sviluppo e la gestione di forme d’energia rinnovabile in tutto il mondo. Fino ai primi anni del 1990, il sito è stato utilizzato come campo di addestramento dei militari russi. Siamo felici di avergli trovato un nuovo impiego

si legge sul comunicato pubblicato sul blog ufficiale dell’azienda. La centrale, che si estende su 47 ettari di terreno, era stata progettata ben prima dell’interessamento di Google, ma gli americani hanno deciso di acquistarne il 49% dalla Capital Stage per poter entrare dalla porta d’ingresso nel club degli investitori nelle energie pulite, visto che la struttura è considerata tra le più grandi del Paese.

Un ottimo inizio per Google e per tutte le aziende che vogliono investire nelle rinnovabili e che potrebbero seguire l’esempio del colosso californiano anche in altri Paesi.

  17. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
