L’esposizione ai gas del diesel fa male ai bambini sin dalla gravidanza

Ridurre le emissioni di carbonio è estremamente importante, ma non deve far dimenticare altri importanti obiettivi come, primo fra tutti, il miglioramento della qualità dell’aria. Un nuovo studio intitolato “L’esposizione in utero ad una bassa concentrazione di gas di scarico diesel interessa l’attività locomotoria spontanea ed il sistema monoaminergico nei topi maschi” pubblicato in Particle and Fibre Toxicology ha studiato l’impatto dell’inquinamento diesel sulla salute sui topi. I ricercatori hanno osservato alcuni effetti preoccupanti (insieme a quelli che già conoscevamo, come i problemi respiratori e cardiovascolari).

Dallo studio si legge che:

E’ stato riportato che l’esposizione neonatale e tra gli adulti ai danni dello scarico diesel, induce alterazioni comportamentali nel sistema nervoso centrale. Recentemente, ci siamo concentrati sugli effetti dell’esposizione prenatale ai gas di scarico diesel sul sistema nervoso centrale. In questo studio, abbiamo esaminato gli effetti dell’esposizione prenatale alla bassa concentrazione dello scarico dei motori diesel sul comportamento e il sistema monoaminergico neuronale.

Hanno dunque esaminato casualmente dei maschi neonati le cui madri erano state esposte ad uno scarico di motori diesel o aria filtrata durante la gravidanza, e fatto osservazioni a intervalli di 10 minuti per la durata di 3 giorni.

Si è constatato che

i topi le cui madri avevano respirato le esalazioni hanno mostrato molto meno attività motoria spontanea, e che tale inattività è stata associata ad alterazioni nel metabolismo dei neurotrasmettitori del cervello.

Non è ancora del tutto chiaro se i gas di scarico del diesel pesino sullo sviluppo dei neonati direttamente o se essi siano colpiti indirettamente, attraverso una modifica del comportamento della madre, ma in ogni modo, sembra che facciano male. È particolarmente preoccupante il fatto che i ricercatori abbiano utilizzato una concentrazione diesel che è vicina a ciò che può essere trovato in Giappone, dove viene utilizzata una formula circa 1000 volte più bassa di quella a cui gli esseri umani sono esposti.
