Per questo l’International Union for the Conservation of Nature sta studiando la possibilità di stilare una nuova lista degli ecosistemi che rischiano il collasso, e che chiaramente vanno protetti.
I danni contro un ecosistema sono esattamente comparabili a quelli alle specie animali, e forse sono anche peggiori visto che per un ecosistema che collassa ne risentono centinaia di specie di animali. La proposta formale dovrebbe essere presentata il prossimo anno da Jon Paul Rodriguez, leader della IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management’s Ecosystems Red List Thematic Group. L’elenco che rappresenterà gli ecosistemi sarà denominato Lista Verde, sarà ufficialmente completata una prima stesura nel 2014, con la copertura globale nel 2025.
