Che cos’è l’Earth Day?
L’Earth Day, il Giorno della Terra, è un evento planetario celebrato per la prima volta il 22 aprile del 1970 con la mission di sensibilizzare la popolazione mondiale alla conservazione delle risorse naturali del nostro Pianeta. Rispondendo ad un appello del senatore democratico Gaylord Nelson, 20 milioni di cittadini americani manifestarono a difesa della Terra.
Da allora le celebrazioni hanno raccolto un seguito sempre maggiore ed oggi a festeggiare il Pianeta sono 192 nazioni, oltre mezzo miliardo di persone. L’ONU celebra questa festa ogni anno all’equinozio di primavera ma la data ufficiale fissata per l’evento globale è il 22 aprile. Associazioni ambientaliste ed ecologisti dedicano questa giornata alla sensibilizzazione del grande pubblico sui temi della conservazione degli ecosistemi, lo sfruttamento eccessivo delle risorse, l’estinzione delle specie animali e vegetali, l’inquinamento e i cambiamenti climatici che mettono a rischio la stessa sopravvivenza dell’uomo sul Pianeta.
Il 22 aprile i Paesi che festeggiano l’Earth Day celebrano la ricorrenza con concerti, manifestazioni, documentari, film incentrati sulle tematiche della salvaguardia dell’ambiente, inteso come habitat dell’uomo, che ha il diritto (ed il dovere) di vivere in un mondo sano, nel rispetto degli equilibri e della sostenibilità. A Roma, in Piazza del Popolo, grandi artisti hanno celebrato con la loro musica la Terra, da Ben Harper a Pino Daniele ai Morcheeba.
Earth Day 2011
L’Earth Day 2011 si incentra su A Billions of Acts Green, un miliardo di azioni verdi, con l’intento di raccogliere migliaia di gesti sostenibili e concreti prima del Summit di Rio, dal 14 al 16 maggio del 2012. Enti pubblici e privati, associazioni, semplici cittadini, tutti possono promettere ed impegnarsi a fare qualcosa per la Terra, scrivendolo sul sito dell‘Earth Day. In Italia si esibiranno per il Pianeta e daranno il loro contributo alla causa Carmen Consoli, Patti Smith, Ennio Morricone, i Rein, Roberto Angelini e Adriano Bono.
