Nel corso degli ultimi anni il tasso di perdita delle foreste nell’Amazzonia brasiliana era in declino costante, ma i dati più recenti ancora una volta dimostrano che il problema è tutt’altro che finito. Secondo i dati diffusi nei giorni scorsi, la deforestazione nella più grande foresta pluviale del mondo è aumentata di quasi il 1000% rispetto allo stesso periodo dell’anno precedente, segnando il primo rialzo da oltre due anni, anche se solo il tempo dirà se è solo un caso o una preoccupante inversione di tendenza.
Un rapporto recentemente divulgato dall’Amazon Institute of People and the Environment (Imazon) rivela che 175 chilometri quadrati di foresta sono stati persi lo scorso dicembre, rispetto ai soli 16 km² del dicembre 2009, un aumento del 994%.
Oltre alla deforestazione, il degrado delle aree in Amazzonia è aumentato ad un ritmo allarmante. Imazon rileva che 541 km² sono stati degradati nel dicembre 2010. Per tutto il mese di dicembre nel 2009, solo 11 km² hanno avuto la stessa sorte, con un aumento incredibile del 4818%. Purtroppo, mentre l’anno scorso è finito male per la foresta Amazzonica, la tendenza sembra dover proseguire con il nuovo anno. Proprio il mese scorso, 83 km² di foresta sono stati “liquidati” e 376 km² degradati, numeri che rappresentano un aumento rispettivamente del 22 e del 637% rispetto ai tassi dello scorso anno.
Gli ultimi dati della devastazione confermano le preoccupazioni espresse dall’Istituto brasiliano di ricerca spaziale (INP), che utilizza immagini satellitari per monitorare la deforestazione. I progetti infrastrutturali, come la costruzione di nuove dighe e autostrade, e l’espansione delle aree agricole sono considerati i colpevoli più probabili per l’incredibile aumento dei tassi di distruzione della foresta. I dati più recenti rilasciati dall’INP indicano un aumento del 10% della deforestazione globale per il periodo che va dall’agosto 2010 al gennaio 2011. Questi risultati sono in netto contrasto con la tendenza al calo della deforestazione negli ultimi anni, e sono le prime indicazioni di un aumento della perdita di foresta.

per favore, si potrebbe pensare un po’ anche alla deforestazione di casa nostra? non facciamo a finta che non ci sia! guardatevi un po’ intorno…anche le potature assurde e selvagge degli alberi cittadini, rientrano, secondo me, nella categoria!
