Attualmente si calcola che a Copenhagen il 36% degli abitanti (oltre 180 mila persone) utilizzino le bici per recarsi al lavoro o a scuola, e si calcola che questa cifra possa arrivare fino al 50% entro il 2015. Un buon risultato, verrebbe da dire. Ed invece…
Secondo la Federazione Ciclisti Danesi e Wonderful Copenhagen, l’organizzazione turistica ufficiale della Danimarca, i turisti nella città sono letteralmente “spaventati” dal flusso ciclistico nella città, tanto da avere persino paura ad inforcare la bicicletta ed unirsi ad esso.
A Copenaghen abbiamo problemi straordinari a causa della congestione del ciclismo. Non manderei mai i miei figli in bicicletta in giro a Copenaghen, soprattutto nelle ore di punta. E’ troppo pericoloso e spaventoso. Io non rischio

Secondo quanto riporta, non è tanto la gente del posto a temere le bici, visto che ormai è abituata, ma sono gli stranieri che finiscono con lo spaventarsi e preferire gli spostamenti in auto. Paradossalmente le piste ciclabili della città, tra le più lunghe d’Europa, stanno strette a questo flusso di cicloamatori, tanto che, specialmente quando c’è più traffico, si rischia spesso di venire spintonati e lo spazio di manovra è molto ridotto. E questo nonostante anche la larghezza delle piste (3-4 metri) sia tra le maggiori al mondo.
Le associazioni dei ciclisti, di contro, portano dati concreti, specialmente quello che mostra come, da quando le biciclette si sono così diffuse, il numero degli incidenti stradali si sia ridotto al minimo storico. D’altra parte però riconoscono che, con l’aumentare delle biciclette, il rischio per i ciclisti c’è, e per questo, anziché ridurne l’uso, chiedono al Governo cittadino di allargare le piste, magari togliendo strada alle inquinantissime automobili. Ah, quanto vorremmo averceli noi questi problemi!
