Nel 2005 l’uragano Katrina distrusse la città di New Orleans e tutto ciò che si trovava nei pressi del delta del Mississipi. Tre anni più tardi, in un silenzio molto maggiore, il ciclone Nargis ha colpito la Birmania uccidento diecimila volte più persone e, a causa dell’esondazione del fiume Irrawaddy, distrusse diversi villaggi ed intere città. L’elenco è ancora lungo, e potrebbe allungarsi ancora di più. Tutto ciò per dire che oltre all’innalzamento del livello dei mari, il pericolo per l’immediato futuro potrebbe derivare dai delta dei fiumi.
Il riscaldamento globale, com’è noto, rinforza i cicloni e li rende molto più devastanti. Insieme a questo fenomeno ne va aggiunto un altro, e cioè che lungo i letti dei fiumi abbiamo costruito sempre di più. Abbiamo disboscato, a volte persino cementificato il letto stesso. Insomma, abbiamo tolto spazio alla natura che, si sa, prima o poi se lo riprende con gli interessi. Una recente ricerca pubblicata su New Scientist ha mostrato quali sono le città a maggior pericolo al mondo per questo fenomeno.
Lo studio parte da un concetto: i delta dei fiumi, con gli scenari climatici prospettati in futuro, potrebbero presto esondare. A farne le spese saranno le città più vicine a quelli più grandi e “maltrattati”, e tra di esse ce ne sono anche diverse italiane. I ricercatori non hanno specificato di quali si tratta, ma hanno inserito il delta del Po nell’elenco dei fiumi più pericolosi. Il motivo è che negli ultimi decenni quest’area ha ceduto di parecchi centimetri (negli anni ’60 ne perse addirittura 6 in un decennio), e presto le città che sono lì vicino, quelle al confine tra Veneto ed Emilia Romagna come Rovigo e Ferrara, con le loro province, potrebbero pagarne le conseguenze.
A livello mondiale al momento sono 11 le aree che rischiano di essere devastate dalla forza della natura. In Europa, oltre al delta del Po, ci sono il delta dell’Ebro, in Spagna, e Rotterdam in Olanda, ma a rischio ci sono anche il Cairo con il Nilo, il delta del Gange, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sacramento, il delta del Colorado e, ovviamente, la Louisiana con il Mississipi che ci ha già dato un assaggio della sua forza 7 anni fa.
