Uno studio pubblicato dal Centro di ricerca tedesco per la salute ambientale di Monaco riporta l’attenzione sulle conseguenze delle centrali nucleari sulla biologia degli animali che vi vivono intorno: uomo compreso. Ventimila aborti spontanei, negli ultimi 40 anni sono stati registrati nelle vicinanze (un raggio di 35 Km) di 31 impianti (27 tedeschi e 4 svizzeri). Aggrava la già spaventosa statistica del fenomeno la correlazione rilevata tra vicinanza delle centrali e aumento dell’incidenza di deformità e tumori infantili.
I ricercatori Ralf Kusmierz, Kristina Voigt e Hagen Scherb, tentavano di stabilire se la sola prossimità agli impianti potesse influire negativamente sulla salute umana anche in condizioni ordinarie ed assenza di gravi incidenti. Lo studio parte dal rilievo degli effetti di Chernobyl sulla natalità, e sul rapporto tra nascituri maschi femmine, il quale evidenziò come in Ucraina e nelle zone toccate dalla nube un milione di bambine e bambini non siano mai nati a causa del disastro.
Gli effetti inibenti delle centrali nucleari sulle nascite si aggravano per il sesso femminile: negli ultimi quarant’anni sono mancate all’appello ventimila bambine. Di norma il rapporto tra maschi e femmine è rispettivamente di: 100 a 105/106, ma nel raggio d’azione delle centrali nucleari in questione si squilibra in favore del sesso maschile a causa della maggior sensibilità degli embrioni femminili agli effetti della radioattività, effetti che, anche in condizioni normali di esercizio delle centrali, si manifestano a causa del rilascio nell’ambiente di sostanze radioattive tossiche. Le normali condizioni di esercizio infatti comprendono anche quegli altrettanto normali (in Francia ne avviene uno ogni tre giorni) “disguidi” o più propriamente incidenti di basso livello che conducono ad un’esposizione della popolazione alla radioattività ritenuta “entro i limiti di sicurezza” stabiliti dalle autorità nazionali. Esposizione che, se ripetuta come spesso accade, produce conseguenze ben al di là di tali comodissimi limiti di sicurezza.
Sono definiti come possibili “incidenti di basso livello” svariate fattispecie: dalle perdite accidentali durante il trasporto e lo smaltimento delle scorie, agli scarichi di acque contaminate in fiumi e torrenti, alla presenza di vapori radioattivi (acqua allo stato gassoso entrata in contatto diretto con i nuclei radioattivi) che però (dovremmo sentirci sollevati) non contengono CO2.
Il nucleare è fondamentale per l’economia ed il bilancio energetico di molte nazioni ed è ovvio che governi e aziende tentino di rassicurare la popolazione con tutti i mezzi.
Uno di questi utilizza la falsa notizia, molto rassicurante, di un consenso diffuso tra la popolazione, nella speranza che divenga poi contagioso. L’ampliamento della centrale dell’EDF energy di Hinkley Point (Sommerset, UK) era stato annunciato come accolto col favore di 6 persone su 10 residenti nella zona. La notizia era emersa da un sondaggio, commissionato dalla stessa EDF e considerato da molti ambiguo. Tra questi Ben Goldacre, che evidenzia come in esso si contravvenga a molte delle regole di base da tenere in considerazione nella compilazione di un questionario statistico serio. In particolare quella che consiglia di stare attenti a non influenzare le risposte.
Secondo Leo Barasi di Climate Sock sono molte le domande in cui, mentre si chiede di pensare agli aspetti positivi e negativi di un nuovo reattore ad Hinkley Point, rientrano sempre in qualche modo i benefici che un nuovo reattore avrebbe sull’economia e sull’occupazione locali di modo tale da ottenere solo negli individui più resoluti, delle risposte in disaccordo.
Come si consolida tale consenso fittizio? La BBC diffonde il dato: sei persone su dieci sono favorevoli all’ampliamento della centrale e magari lo diventano davvero.
