Accendere candele di cera contenenti paraffina, il tipo più comune utilizzato per infondere alle stanze un’atmosfera romantica, calore, luce, e centinaia di fragranze diverse, è in reltà una sconosciuta fonte di esposizione all’inquinamento. Diversi studi hanno compreso che alcuni noti agenti cancerogeni umani sono presenti in queste candele, come già tempo fa aveva denunciato la trasmissione televisiva Striscia La Notizia.
Alti livelli in ambienti chiusi possono ridurre la ventilazione e la quantità d’ossigeno, come indicato in uno studio presentato in occasione della 238a Assemblea nazionale della American Chemical Society (ACS) tenutasi a Washington, Stati Uniti.
Nello studio, i dottori R. Massoudi e Amid Hamidi hanno spiegato che le candele fatte con cera d’api o di soia, anche se più costose, a quanto pare sono più sane. Esse infatti non rilasciano alcuna quantità di sostanze inquinanti potenzialmente nocive nell’aria negli ambienti chiusi, pur mantenendo tutte le caratteristiche di calore, atmosfera e profumo delle candele di paraffina (che sono fatte dal petrolio e quindi, essendo le meno costose, sono anche quelle più utilizzate).
Spiega Hamidi che:
Accendere una candela di paraffina occasionalmente non provoca emissioni che possano incidere sullo stato di salute probabilmente. Ma l’illuminazione di molte candele di paraffina ogni giorno per anni, o accenderne spesso in un bagno poco ventilato nei pressi di una vasca, ad esempio, può causare problemi.
Ma i problemi non sono soltanto oncologici. Per alcune persone infatti possono essere nascosti dei problemi di salute più imminenti di un’esposizione prolungata. Oltre ai rischi più gravi infatti, lo studio ha anche suggerito che alcune persone possono essere allergiche ad alcuni derivati del petrolio, o subire un’irritazione respiratoria a causa della reazione alle sostanze inquinanti della combustione delle candele. Senza dimenticare che la combustione di materiali come la paraffina è inquinante per l’ambiente, molto più che accendere una candela fatta con cera d’api.
