Per almeno un mese l’Italia ha potuto vantare il primato di bandiere blu, l’attestazione dell’alta qualità delle spiagge, che la facevano sembrare un Paradiso per i turisti. Ma oggi il nostro Paese si risveglia da questo idillio, scoprendo di avere anche molte “bandiere rosse“. Queste sono una novità, e vanno decisamente in contrasto con le buone notizie dell’inizio di maggio.

Questa attestazione, che come è facile capire dal colore, è esattamente il contrario della bandiera blu, punisce quelle spiagge (costiere o interne) “non conformi ai requisiti minimi della direttiva Ue sulla qualità delle acque”, e viene assegnata dall’Agenzia Europea per l’Ambiente dopo un attento studio dell’acqua e delle zone adiacenti la costa. Quest’anno le bandiere rosse assegnate all’Italia sono 56.

Due questioni vanno chiarite: primo, non è detto che se una spiaggia non è bandiera blu è automaticamente bandiera rossa. Le spiagge non conformi infatti sono solo l’1% di quelle italiane, e dunque la situazione non è così grave come sembra a primo impatto. In secondo luogo, l’Ue ha ammesso di aver utilizzato il pugno di ferro con l’Italia più che con le altre nazioni, considerando anche le aree industriali e portuarie, mentre negli altri Stati venivano considerate solo le spiagge per bagnanti.

Nonostante con gli altri Paesi dunque l’Ue sia andata più cauta, c’è chi sta peggio di noi. In Francia infatti le spiagge non conformi sono più del doppio rispetto alle nostre (129 o il 3,9% del totale), seguita dalla Polonia (13,7%), Belgio (8,7%), Olanda (7,1%), Gran Bretagna (2,3%) e solo la Spagna ne ha di meno (0,7%). I criteri di assegnazione delle bandiere rosse riguardavano la presenza o meno degli impianti di depurazione e la vicinanza delle zone industriali.

Delle 56 spiagge “cattive”, quasi la metà, ben 23, sono in Veneto, mentre la Liguria, che vanta il maggior numero di bandiere blu, deve fare i conti anche con 8 bandiere rosse. A seguire troviamo la Calabria (6), Campania (5), Marche (4), Sicilia (3, tutte molto vicine, in provincia di Messina), e le altre in Trentino, Toscana e Abruzzo.
