Non tutti lo sanno ma il pipistrello, il cui ruolo negli ecosistemi è a dir poco prezioso e fondamentale, è tra i mammiferi più perseguitati al mondo, tanto che il 2011 è stato proclamato l’anno europeo dedicato a questa specie mentre il 2012, per volere dell’ONU, sarà l’anno internazionale consacrato alla sensibilizzazione sul valore di questo animale per l’ambiente e per l’uomo. I pipistrelli vanno tutelati soprattutto con una campagna di informazione che sfati alcuni dei miti che circolano sul suo conto e lo rendono temibile agli occhi dell’uomo, in molti lo trovano repellente e fuggono alla sua vista. Ad esempio si crede che possa attaccarsi ai capelli e non venire più via.

Gli esperti pensano che figure come Dracula, il succhiasangue, e persino Batman, l’eroe che perseguita i cattivi usando una veste di pipistrello, abbiano contribuito a creare un alone di mistero e d’inquietante sulla sua figura. Inoltre la sua vita notturna, gli odori non proprio gradevoli all’olfatto umano e certe abitudini come dormire a testa in giù lo rendono un ospite guardato con un certo sospetto anche se, negli ultimi anni, per via della sua caccia spietata alle zanzare, è diventa un po’ l’eroe di molte case che espongono le bat box proprio per dotarsi di un antizanzare naturale e tra i più efficaci, ne uccide centinaia a notte altro che sostanze tossiche.

C’è chi crede le sue urine, al contrario di quelle dei piccioni, portino sfortuna se cadono in testa. Altro mito vuole i chirotteri ciechi, in realtà non è così.
Oggi l’animale è a rischio per l’inquinamento e per la mancanza di rifugi e cibo. Chi vuole può aiutarlo comprando la batbox online o alla Coop (a 22 euro circa). E’ un modo per tenere lontane le zanzare con rimedi naturali, quello che impiega i pipistrelli. I fastidiosi insetti ronzanti, oltre ad essere irritanti, quelli sì che veicolano numerose malattie e arrivano ad attaccarsi alla pelle assetate del nostro sangue.
