I funzionari governativi inglesi hanno iscritto i militanti ambientali estremisti di fianco ai gruppi dissidenti repubblicani irlandesi e ai terroristi ispirati da al-Qaeda nei documenti sulla sicurezza interna, scovati dal quotidiano The Guardian.
Gli orientamenti in materia di estremismo, prodotti dal Ministero della Giustizia, dicono che:
Il Regno Unit, come molti altri Paesi, deve affrontare una continua minaccia da parte di estremisti che credono di poter avanzare i loro obiettivi commettendo atti di terrorismo.
L’elenco è stato inviato al gruppo parlamentare, che sta riscrivendo la giurisprudenza in merito ad una serie di attivisti, tra cui gli ambientalisti. Nella lista essi vengono marchiati come “estremisti ambientali” al fianco di attivisti di estrema destra, dissidenti repubblicani irlandesi, i paramilitari lealisti e al-Qaeda.
Tra i gruppi estremisti attualmente sono classificati tutti coloro che hanno commesso
reati gravi in base ad una ideologia o causa.
E così diventano “pericolose” le manifestazioni di protesta sui diritti degli animali e sull’ambientalismo, prevedendo pene simili a quelle comminate ai terroristi politici. In particolare i neonati “Estremisti ambientali” sono descritti come persone che hanno commesso una
attività criminosa motivata dalla filosofia generale e movimento sociale incentrato su un problema di conservazione e miglioramento dell’ambiente naturale.
Ovviamente gli ambientalisti rifiutano l’etichetta di estremisti, dicendo che le loro proteste sono pacifiche e non violente. Harry Fletcher, assistente segretario generale del sindacato Napo, ha detto che i suoi membri sono scontenti dei tentativi del Governo di associare gli attivisti ambientali con i sospetti terroristi. Per lui l’orientamento sembra essere parte di un più ampio tentativo da parte di alcuni funzionari del Governo di intervenire per motivi politici nel lavoro del personale che si occupa di giustizia penale.
Ben Stewart, di Greenpeace, ha dichiarato:
Il movimento ambientalista non ha mai avuto nemmeno una volta obiettivi politici o usato la violenza, che è qualcosa che Jack Straw, ministro degli esteri durante l’invasione dell’Iraq, può certamente rivendicare. Il suo ministero della Giustizia farebbe meglio a ricordare che la stessa azione pacifica diretta ha una storia lunga e nobile in questo Paese.
Dal Governo hanno risposto che le pene non saranno uguali a quelle comminate ai terroristi, ma certo è che se la figura dell’estremista politico e dell’ambientalista vengono accomunate sotto lo stesso tipo di reato, sarà poi difficile assegnare pene differenti.
