Il destino dei pochi esemplari di balena grigia rimasti al mondo è appeso ai risultati dei ricorsi inoltrati alle autorità russe e ai tribunali giudiziari, dopo il rifiuto, da parte del consorzio petrolifero Exxon a rinunciare alla costruzione di un nuovo oleodotto.
In realtà, i magnati dell’oro nero avrebbero dovuto semplicemente prendere in considerazione proposte alternative a quella di far passare gli impianti petroliferi attraverso una laguna cruciale per l’approvvigionamento alimentare delle balene grigie.

Il mese scorso il governo russo aveva deliberatamente e clamorosamente ignorato gli impatti sulla laguna di Piltun, approvando l’edificazione dell’oleodotto, che fa parte del progetto Sakhalin-1, portato avanti da colossi petroliferi come la Exxon e da altre compagnie petrolifere giapponesi, indiane e russe.
In tutto il mondo restano soltanto 130 esemplari di balena grigia occidentale, tra cui soltanto 20 sono femmine in grado di riprodursi e di preservare la specie.

Le balene grigie si raccolgono nelle acque che circondano Sakhalin, nella parte più a Oriente della Russia per un periodo di quattro mesi, durante il quale raccolgono le riserve di cibo necessarie a costituire gli ammassi di grasso che gli consentiranno di sopravvivere per tutto il resto dell’anno.
La Laguna di Piltun risulta dunque fondamentale per la sopravvivenza della specie, essendo ricca delle fonti di cibo principali delle balene: ostriche, anemoni di mare, vongole, stelle marine.
La Moscow Tagansky Court ha accettato la scorsa settimana il ricorso da parte di associazioni ambientaliste e locali come la Sakhalin Association of Indigenous Peoples e la Sakhalin Environmental Watch, presentato per far cambiare rotta all’oleodotto.
Una relazione, commissionata dal WWF-Russia, da Greenpeace e dall’International Fund for Animal Welfare, era stata consegnata al ministro dell’ambiente russo Yury Trutnev all’inizio del 2008, proprio dopo che il consorzio aveva respinto l’offerta di negoziare un nuovo percorso per la conduttura.
Di recente, il WWF-Russia ha nuovamente scritto al ministro Trutnev, chiedendogli di interrompere il progetto della Exxon.

Exxon non può essere considerata una compagnia attenta alle problematiche ambientali, se costruisce un oleodotto in contrasto con il parere di tutte le autorità russe competenti in politica ambientale.

Il WWF sta attualmente negoziando con il governo per la creazione di una zona marina protetta nella laguna di Piltun. Se dovesse andare a buon fine, la costruzione dell’oleodotto dovrebbe essere proibita all’interno della laguna. Ce lo auguriamo anche noi, insieme alle balene grigie…
