Chi più chi meno, tutti ci dichiariamo amici degli animali. Se così è veramente, non basta però diventare vegetariani. Il modo migliore per salvare gli animali non consiste soltanto nel manifestare in loro favore o nel mangiare esclusivamente verdura quanto soprattutto stare attenti ai prodotti che si usano.
Di solito pensiamo che solo i cosmetici e poco altro provengano da animali o da test compiuti su di essi, ma esistono alcuni oggetti di uso comune, con cui tutti abbiamo a che fare ogni giorno, che provengono da parti di animale, a volte per tutte le marche, altre soltanto per scelta di alcune aziende.
L’Ontario Animal Farm Council afferma che, in media, viene utilizzo il 98% di un animale. Di quel 98%, circa il 55% viene utilizzato per i prodotti alimentari ed il restante 45% per i prodotti non commestibili. Andiamo a vedere quali sono:
1. Buste di plastica. Non c’è solo il petrolio a formare questi terribili prodotti, che per fortuna stanno sparendo dalle nostre case, ma anche grassi animali utilizzati come additivi per
migliorare le proprietà dei materiali e/o per aiutare nella lavorazione dei polimeri primi

5. Fuochi d’artificio. Non solo inquinano, ma alcuni sono fatti con lo stesso componente utilizzato nel settore dei pneumatici, l’acido stearico, utilizzato per impedire l’ossidazione dei metalli.
6. Ammorbidenti. Non tutti, ma in particolare l’ammorbidente Downy (che in Italia è pubblicizzato con il nome di Lenor) contiene cloruro di ammonio dimetilico da sego diidrogenato che viene da bovini, ovini e cavalli.
7. Shampoo & Balsamo. Come molti prodotti cosmetici, anche alcuni shampoo e balsamo hanno ingredienti di origine animale. Secondo la PETA, ci sono più di 20 componenti provenienti da animali che potrebbero trovarsi nel vostro shampoo e balsamo. Quando si legge “Pantenolo”, “Aminoacidi”, o “Vitamina B” in una bottiglia (solo per citarne alcuni), può essere che questi siano di origine animale o vegetale, ma la distinzione sull’etichetta non c’è. Alcune aziende hanno anche rimosso la parola “animale” da alcuni ingredienti per non perdere i clienti.
8. Dentifricio. La glicerina si trova in grassi animali e vegetali, che hanno una composizione chimica contenente dal 7% al 13% di glicerina. Quando separata, è utilizzata in una vasta gamma di prodotti, incluso il dentifricio. Anche qui distinguere l’origine è difficile.
