Apre oggi a Portici, in provincia di Napoli, nello storico complesso Macello Borbonico messo a disposizione gratuita dal comune, Il Centro Ricerche Tartarughe Marine più grande del Mediterraneo. Progetto costato oltre 1,3 milioni di euro, il centro nasce come proseguimento dell’eredità del Turtle Point di Bagnoli, chiuso nel 2014 ed è stato realizzato dalla Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn con il contributo della Regione Campania. Sarà dotato di una nursery per i cuccioli, un ospedale dove curare gli animali feriti e laboratori per la ricerca e l’esposizione didattica, ma anche di una sala operatoria, strumenti per le radiografie e laboratori per le analisi ambientali perché all’interno del centro sarà ospitato anche l’Osservatorio del Golfo di Napoli, per il monitoraggio della qualità delle sue acque.
Il centro si occuperà della cura delle conservazione delle tartarughe di mare e curerà le più bisognose di assistenza, perchè si feriscono o perchè restano intrappolate nelle reti dei pescatori o perchè mangiano plastica o spazzatura che possono causare blocchi intestinali. Nella nursery invece si cureranno i cuccioli di tartaruga, che sono gli esemplari più delicati e vulnerabili perchè, dopo le schiuse che avvengono in tarda estate, possono andare incontro alle acque troppo fredde oppure a correnti che potrebbero trascinarle verso Nord. Una volta guarite, le tartarughe saranno liberate e poi dotate di sensori e gps. In questo modo diventeranno delle vere e proprie sentinelle dell’ambiente e durante le loro rotte migratorie potranno restituire dati importantissimi sulla qualità, la temperatura e la salinità delle acque.
Il centro sarà visitabile dal pubblico e si dedicherà anche alla divulgazione con una esposizione didattica e sale multimediali aperte al pubblico e alle scolaresche.
