Inquinamento atmosferico provoca infarto quanto alcol e caffè

L’abuso di alcol, caffè ed il troppo sport sono fattori di rischio noti per l’infarto, cause scatenanti problemi cardiovascolari che creano le condizioni per l’insorgenza di attacchi di cuore. Dei primi due, in particolare, si parla molto spesso nelle campagne di prevenzione e sensibilizzazione della popolazione sulla salute pubblica. Si parla poco, invece, di un fattore di rischio ambientale presente nelle nostre città che ultimamente, grazie alle polemiche sul superamento dei limiti di polveri sottili nelle metropoli italiane, sta emergendo con prepotenza e finalmente sta avendo l’attenzione che merita: l’inquinamento atmosferico.

Che provocasse un aggravarsi dei sintomi di asma, allergie, con rischi enormi per lo sviluppo dei polmoni dei bambini, aumento di eczema e rinite allergica, incremento delle patologie respiratorie se ne era già discusso e accertato in precedenti studi. La ricerca aveva inoltre da tempo appurato che vivere vicino ad arterie stradali esponesse ad un rischio maggiore di subire un ictus o un infarto. Oggi scopriamo, e non ne siamo affatto sorpresi a dire il vero, che l’inquinamento atmosferico provocherebbe lo stesso numero di infarti dell’alcol, del caffè e del troppo sport.

A dirlo è un recente studio effettuato da un’équipe di ricercatori afferente alla Hasselt University di Diepenbeek ed all’Università Cattolica di Lovanio in Belgio. Gli esperti spiegano che

dei fattori studiati, la cocaina è quella che è maggiormente in grado di provocare un infarto, ma il traffico vanta la maggiore fetta di popolazione esposta.

Eh già perché a pensarci bene se si può evitare di drogarsi scegliendo comportamenti sani, lo smog lo subiamo tutti, chi più chi meno, perché non si può evitare di uscire, di andare a lavoro, di fare due passi in centro.
La ricerca è apparsa sull’autorevole rivista di divulgazione scientifica The Lancet ed ha preso in esame 36 ricerche precedenti sull’argomento.

Dai dati estrapolati è emerso che lo smog aumenta il rischio di infarto del 5%, il caffè di 1,5 volte e l’alcol di 3 volte. La più alta Paf, ovvero la frazione di popolazione esposta attribuibile ad un singolo fattore di rischio è stata proprio quella riconducibile all’esposizione al traffico pari a 7,4%.

La Paf, spiegano gli autori, ci dà una misura di quanto gli infarti potrebbero essere evitati se quel fattore di rischio non fosse più presente.
